MUSIC FOR SAXOPHONES
Tommy Fortmann’s friendship with the saxophonist Marco Falaschi, his assistants and pupils has inspired him to write a number of compositions for saxophone.
SONATE for sax alto; pno
The sonata’s sequence follows classical tradition, andante-adagio-rondo. The strong main theme exposed in the andante, unfolds during its progress in a twelve tone scale (Sonatenhauptsatzform). A piece which swings between tonal and ‘quasi-tonal’, strongly rhythmic in the andante and rondo.
A LITTLE AMERICAN NIGHT MUSIC quartet
Commissioned by the Mozart Festival Trento for the Berlioz Quartet. By way of applying the North’s Ragtime and the South’s Tango (the two probably most important rhythms of American music history), the composition brings about a humorous and unique transformation of the themes from the ‘Kleine Nachtmusik’.
