TOMMY FORTMANN

PYTHAGORAS
Symphony

"More and more I started to ask myself about the meaning of composing. I could only find purpose in writing when the composition contained a creative invention and a formal process, while at the same time having the ability to reach and 'touch' the listener.
With my intention to write a Pythagorean symphony, I realized that on one hand, a deep look into the antique, Greek music and on the other hand, a study of the entireness teachings of Pythagoras, was unavoidable. The writings of 'Fabre d'Olivier' I found especially interesting. His translation of the 'Golden Verses' became my text."

Commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office for Culture.
Premiered in Orbetello, Italy.
