SOMMERFRAU & WINTERWOLF (Summer Woman & Winter Wolf) Music Theater
By Juerg Schubiger and Tommy Fortmann
The idea: a musical theatre, for adults and teenagers alike, global if possible, neither 'musical' nor operetta, with little expenditure. The four fairytales written by Juerg Schubiger symbolize the four seasons. The music does not follow a pattern of titles, like it does in a 'musical,' but instead moves from short, thematic inserts to long and decorated sections. Thus it creates the impression of a constant presence of music, speech, and movement. The actor doesn't "act", but instead tells the story; the mime doesn't 'mime,' but instead associates; the music doesn't summarize, but simply conveys - therefore giving the listener a chance to create a concrete picture in his own imagination.
Juerg Schubiger writes literature and children's books, for which he has won several awards. In 1996 he won the German children's literature award.
Premiered at the Open Opera St. Gallen, Switzerland. Commissioned by the City of Zurich, Switzerland.
